what has log4j got to do with it? what are you expecting it to do?
You are not giving us the full details, so there is nothing for us to really help you with.
If there is an error, then a general java exception will be thrown and you can read that.
i take it you have tried your code __outside__ of a servlet and created a simple Java class to get yourself familiar with POI.
