Not an answer, but a guess. I ran into a similar issue with my cell validations. It seems Excel (not POI) has a max character limit of 255 (256 really) for the source, prompt and error text. When you created a large validation, you would get a similar error message when you opened the file.
I don't see the original post, so this may not apply.
