Probably your best bet is just to have a template with a dummy document embedded in it, and then update the embedded part with your real data. I've a feeling you also need to zap the cached rendering of the embedded part to force PowerPoint to update the picture of the embedded doc. (Otherwise it may still show the old one until you go into the embedded file)
There are all sorts of complicated links, as well as pre-rendered versions and other things that make doing it from scratch quite tricky. Not impossible, but hard enough you probably just want to use a template :)
