The user list is really the wrong place to ask questions like these; they really belong on the dev list I think.
Also, bear in mind that POI is voluntary and it is common for users to contribute updates and additional functionality if they are urgently required. Often POI's developers are working on a specific section of the api because it is important to them or to their employers. If HWPF is important to you, it may be worth approaching your employer to see if they will allow you to work on enhancing the api and then contributing these updates to the project. I seem to remember that a lead developer had emerged for HWPF and it would certainly be worth trying to work with them (or at least working with them to discuss problems) to enhance the api - again you are better posting to the user list to discover if they are still working on HWPF.
