Unconditional assert in SXSSF?

SXSSF looks terrific. great contribution.  However, I've run into a snag
converting our application to use it.  In POI 3.8, the first line of
SXSSFRow.getCell(int, MissingCellPolicy) is:

 

    assert false;

 

.which of course means the method can't be called if asserts are on.  Is
there a good reason for this assert?
