I am using Ranger 0.4 and facing issues with the synchronisation of UNIX users
& groups. I am performing all shell commands on the UserSync node.

What works:

  1. Adding a new UNIX user on the UserSync node synchronises with Ranger,
therefore the same user appears in the UI as an “External” user. I am then able
to

What doesn’t work:

1. Some users do not appear in Ranger UI. E.g. Hive user.

2. UNIX groups are no longer synchronising with HDFS. Previously I was able to
run:

  1.
     *   “useradd -G group1,group2 user1”
     *   "hdfs dfsadmin -refreshUserToGroupsMappings"
     *   “hdfs groups user1"

          And it would show:     “user1 : user1 group1 group2"

          However this no longer works! Instead I see an output of “user1 : “
          When I switch to the Ranger UI, it is very inconsistent. Sometimes I
can see “User1” as an “External” user belonging to User1,group1 & group2 OR
sometimes it will show “User1” belonging to just the “user1” group.

3. Adding a new UNIX group on the UserSync node does not synchronise with
Ranger or HDFS. If I run:
“groupadd group3”
“usermod -a -G group3 user1”
The user is successfully added to the new group on a UNIX level but not on a
Ranger or HDFS level.

Is the process in which I am adding UNIX users/groups incorrect?

Thanks,
Dale
