Did you set the "Handle of weblog to serve as
frontpage blog" and "Enable aggregated frontpage
feeds" properties in site settings configuration
page? If not, you have to set these properties so that
the blog with the frontpage theme can serve as
frontpage. There are some additional properties that
you can set in that page such as "Site Name (for main
page and RSS feed)", "Short name (shown in site
banner)", "Site Description (for main page and RSS
feed)" etc...
