Hi, ServiceMix uses a modified version of Spring, that supports a so-called XML syntax extension mechanism. There are some information about it at http://radio.weblogs.com/0112098/2005/06/10.html
For the moment, the XmlApplicationContext has been modified but James is porting it to gbean (http://gbean.org) so that it is cleaner... I don't know much more..
