I suppose you need to configure one of the Shale ViewHandlers for JSF, as stated in the docs here: http://shale.apache.org/shale-core/apidocs/org/apache/shale/view/ViewController.html I use Clay's ViewHandler (org.apache.shale.clay.faces.ClayViewHandler) together with an own ViewControllerMapper as documented here: http://wiki.apache.org/shale/ViewControllerMapper.
