2. Yes, kafka and brokers on the same host. 3. I am working with kafka 0.7.3 and spark 1.3.1. Kafka 0.7.3 does not has "--describe" command. Though I've worked on three cases (Kafka and Zookeeper were on my machine all the time): (i) Producer-Consumer on my machine. (ii) Producer on my machine and Consumer on different machine. (iii) Consumer on my machine and producer on different machine.
