how many producers do you have? there was a bug with older versions of kafka (don't know if it's fixed in release version, I'd have to dig up the issue) where if you don't have message id set when you produce the message, it will only send to one partition at a time. if you have more than 1 producer at a time then each would write to a separate partition.
