No storm does not take care of replaying message It just calls spout's fail method When you look at KafkaSpout's fail method, there's a logic in case of failure. Currently, it fetches buffer size of data again from the offset and checks if they are already processed, and if not, replay that message. In short, exactly-once message processing is not guaranteed by storm but implemented by KafkaSpout in its own way.
