i did something of this sort for microsoft word but not sure about ppts. i did use jni to achieve that.

I haven't used this, but I recently found a Java library for managing Powerpoint files at

It's commercial, but seemed to be reasonably priced.
Regarding using JACOB, note that Microsoft specifically warns against trying to script Office apps to run on an unattended server, because they just aren't designed for that.
