I thing sslext is a very good way, if you use mixed HTTP and HTTPS. Unfortunally it is not well documented ;-), but there are less things to do. If you will use it, I can give you an overview, what to do, but not imediately. The roadmap says, that sslext will be integrated in further struts versions.
