Running the same application using struts 1.1 works fine.

Marc - you might try upgrading to 1.2.4 instead of 1.2.2. The older version had some problems, especially in the area of validation (Although I don't remember something like this ever being mentioned)
If the reason you are upgrading is because 1.2.2 is considered "release quality" code then you need to wait, 1.2.2 was demoted, and there is no 1.2.x version that is considered general availability/release quality yet.
