Though I haven't used the xtags, it looks like to me that the 
<xtags:parse> tag is expecting a Reader not a String. You could probably 
make it work by doing something like this:
<%
 StringReader xml = new StringReader((String) 
request.getAttribute("xmlString"));
%>
