You may want to check out sarissa [1], a JS library i've written for doing this and other related tasks like XSLT and XPath using a crossbrowser API . It's well documented and open source. There's also a related turorial at oreilly's xml.com at [2]. I intent to wrap up some JSP taglibs to ease development for server side developers one of these days...
