Rivka, your code is working because you are using primitive type int and not
the wrapper type Integer.
In case of primitive type in case of any exception, it gives you a default
value.

I don't think because it's int and not Integer - even with Integer it's
the same, because the "problem" is in BeanUtils, not in struts exactly.
I hope today or tommorow I'll have a bit more time to investigate it ...
