If you hate hand editing XML files, why do it? That's what tool are for ... and this applies to Struts just as much as it does to JSF. IDEs can deal with this, but they are not required -- go get Faces Console or Struts Console from jamesholmes.com and "be done" with editing XML files yourself. You can use these gadgets either standalone or as plugins to your favorite IDE.
