I'm just a bit worried about a  snowball effect where people start seeing OT
posts as acceptable and the number slowly grow as more people make them to
the stage where the signal to noise ration becomes painful because, as we've
seen, the original posters rarely start with OT in their subject.

As for democracy, what's that then?, and has it ever applied to mailing
lists? :).

Just ignore OT posts if they get on your nerves. They will eventually go
away. As much as I'd love to see some folks disappear from certain lists,
it's not very democratic. :(
