I'd suggest that you take a look at Spring Security. It can be simple,simple,simple but has the ability to scale up to flexible,flexible, flexible and complex,complex,complex. The added advantage is that it is designed as a specialist security module and (unless you do something stupid) all/most of the "gotchas" present in rolling your own are taken care of.
