Generally speaking, when you use a struts tag and you do NOT specify an object, the tag will default to using the object at the top of the stack. The push tag lets you force a specific object to be at the top of the stack, so you can write generic, reusable jsp code (like fragments, etc.) that doesn't reference the object name directly and instead operates only on its generic properties.
