Hi Oliver, the difference is really simple: roles are roles while memberships are the association between users and roles.
A membership attribute is an attribute owned by a certain user because he has a certain role (e.g. a user has 'employeeId' attribute if you give him the 'employee' role: if a membership user/employee has been created).
