Looks like a bug to me. It seems like HadoopConfigurationBuilder assumes that a Hadoop cluster has both a namenode and a jobtracker.
Can add an issue to JIRA? https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/WHIRR BTW it should be easy to fix: catch the NoSuchElementException in Cluster.getInstancesMatching and return an empty set.
