Thanks for reporting this - although I am quite surprised this doesn't
work. Someone found a similar issue today which makes me think we'll
have to do a 1.1.1 release soon to fix it. Could you please file a JIRA
issue and we'll get it fixed soon!

seems to support WSDL element such as below where the element uses a ref
defined somewhere else. An exception is generated as seen below. If I add
