XMLBeans 1.0.4 and 2.0.0 are both built with JDK 1.4.
There is, however, a release for JDK 1.3 called 1.0.4-jdk1.3.

I downloaded binary version of the xmlbean. My guess is that the binary
version was built with JDK1.3.

Seems to me that your path is pointing to another executable.
