That is what I am essentially doing , as I have multiple excel data sets that I read . I just increment the waitbar for each data set. At least the user gets some feedback on the progress . A bit of a hack

This one will keep oscillating in an asynchronous way (in the background) until you delete it. However, even if Scilab would be able to launch threads at the user level, updating a bar showing progression would need to be hardcoded in xls_read, because you have to know the current position you are reading w.r.t. the overall size ot the data stream. The only case where something could be done is if your data is organized in many sheets within the xls file. In that case you could iterate on sheets and update a waitbar().
