By chance, are you trying to open a foreign file (such as matlab)?

In such case you should open the file in an external text editor, copy it and 
then paste into SciNotes, which you should open previously directly from the 
Applications menu of the console or writing scinotes() on the console.

Scinotes uses, I think UTF-8. When I attempted to open old matlab files which 
use another encoding I frequently got a warning.

Maybe this is not the problem you are experiencing, so... sorry if this doesn't 
help. Might also be due to an unsupported operating system or a corrupted one 
(for instance, if parts that are necessary to fully run Scilab (including its 
editor) have been deleted or changed when installing other software.

In the meantime you could try other external editors, such as Notepad ++ (which 
has some sort of syntax awareness). You can integrate them by unchecking 
SciNotes in the preferences window SciNotes tab (this is rather 
counterintuitive) and choosing other one.
