Hi!
I've tried with both request and session scope for the
mainWindowBeanHandler, but it's still doing nothing :(
  
If you say you press the link and nothing happens, do you mean no http 
request will be sent to the server?
To you see any browser action?
If not, it might be a javascript problem.

I use myfaces-1.1.1 and it looks like I have a similar problem when I 
place a inputHtml component in my form ... currently investigating it.
