Yes, Tomahawk does work with Sun's RI.

The attribute newspaperColumns in the <t:dataTable> was added after
Tomahawk 1.1.3.  You can build MyFaces and Tomahawk 1.1.5-SNAPSHOT
just use Tomahawk 1.1.5-SNAPSHOT with Sun's RI.

I suspect you are not running the same version of MyFaces and Tomahawk as www.irian.at. They are running a recent 1.1.5-SNAPSHOT. For more information on building the current snapshot see:
