thanks for the replies. on this project it turns out I didn't have to do this in the end, but it's a really interesting area, and something I'll certainly use in the future. we're very keen on the whole fire-and-forget paradigm that JMS offers. I had a look around Joe's idea of interacting with the JMX Mbean, and it looks easy to do with Spring JMX support.
