No. That patch is good. Without it you will have a problem with dictionary spammers, with exactly the symptoms you described. Evidently there is another problem with similar results.

What happens, then. You run an MTA, it connects via LMTP. Is the LMTP connection accepted? At which point during the LMTP conversation does progress cease (in cases where the bug strikes)?
