I said exactly what Alex told you, but I was wrong ;) I've thought of a way to achieve it since then.
The problem is that if there's a split, and both masters add a new message to their copy of the database, then IMAP's restraints are such that merging when the masters regain contact is sort of impossible. Except that I've thought of a way.
