I was hoping to find an open source tool (like JForum, etc.) that could be easily integrated into my app to provide comment/forum functionality for various objects in my model, but I found none that were really set up to integrate well into a separate webapp. That means I'm back to rolling my own comment system. I'd like to leverage other's efforts as much as possible while still providing users with a simple interface that does not itself present security risks.

The ability for users to generate something more than plain text without having to first learn html is attractive. I don't strictly need wysiwyg, but I've yet to see anything be between these two extremes. There are a number of free tools out there (dojo integrated into struts2, tinyMCE, FCKeditor, etc.) but I've had issues with each, and running on Safari is one of my requirements. http://www.htmlarea.com/ was a useful resource in tracking down alternatives, but I was hoping to find folks here with experience with any of these tools... ...anyone have any experience with any of these tools and care to share "yeah!" or "stay away from that one!" (or more detailed) comments?

Separately, does anyone have any knowledge of robust tools to "clean" html snippets uploaded by users? (For example, removing script or object tags so as not to present an opportunity for malicious users to do anything evil to others viewing their content.)
