What does your managed bean look like?

Ive followed the jsf tutorial and I am displaying a dataTable. The table
displays and is initially sorted according to the default sort but when I
click on any of the columns the page reloads but no sorting occurs. I try
the paging (tablefooter), again the page reloads but no movement.
paging and sorting works on the tables supplied with appfuse like users but
not when it comes to anything ive added.
the only difference is that the dataTable gets supplied as
<f:subview id="companydata">
<ui:include src="companyItemsList.xhtml"/>
</f:subview>
any suggestions?
