Other option is to use Spring as a lightweight plugin container: http://www.devx.com/Java/Article/31835/1954?pf=true. There is a more formal project at Spring to handle such functionality: http://www.springframework.org/osgi. It is on the roadmap for AppFuse at some point in the future.
