Silly me - I should have said up front - JSF.
In the mean time I've "solved" the issue by manually copying the
commons-el.jar file (from appfuse\lib\servletapi-2.3 folder) into the tomcat
lib directory. My application now starts up without errors and seems to be
working - I'm still running tests. Does this make sense?
