I can't answer too many questions about this, and I am an absolute JSF newbie. However, I have started experimenting with this exact combo, and ran into the same problem with Eclipse (Europa) because I was using Tomcat-5.5. Use Tomcat 6, and define a Eclipse server to deploy your app to, and it should work.
