The guy who wrote that blog entry (Andrey) is the Lead Developer of AtLeap, which is based on a 1.x version of AppFuse. I know Andrey (mostly via AppFuse and AtLeap) and he's a really sharp guy so he's probably right. Seems like a pretty big limitation of WebSphere. I believer Roller uses something similar to AppFuse and it doesn't require this change AFAIK.
