If you want to use AppFuse in embedded mode, you'll need to exclude the XFire dependencies from appfuse-service. For Ajax4JSF, you'll need to exclude those dependencies on appfuse-jsf.
As a test, it might be easier for you to full-source a project and manually delete these dependencies and replace them with your own.
