Aha, that is indeed that cause of this issue. Active Directory is storing usernames as Firstname.Surname. And as you've experienced, all other apps I've configured to authenticate against our AD have treated user names case-insensitively, but not archiva/redback... I shall have a dig into the redback and archiva code and see if I can figure out where the root cause of this issue is.
