Hello Roland!
You are most welcome to ask questions. Hopefully you will get good
answers. Here are my answers on this subject...
1. Creating a dependency between two classes in two different packages
will not automatically create a dependency between the two packages. I
would probably think this would be disturbing.
Notice also that for other purposes, the dependencies from class A to
all packages surrounding class B and vice versa and dependencies between
the different levels of packages are equally useful so a single
dependency between the classes app1.server.impl.Service and
app2.client.calculator.Sum would yield 16 dependencies if all should be
created.
What I would like to see in ArgoUML to eventually address this is a way
to have pluggable critics with wizards and perhaps go so far as the tool
supporting pluggable constraints. Then a set of critics and wizards can
be created that can be enabled when you are doing UML work that requires
this.
2. The general convention when using UML is to only show the
associations (and generalizations) when both ends of the association are
present in the diagram. This is an important convention because it
allows the same type of diagrams to be used to show different levels of
abstraction and different focuses in the same model without clouding the
diagram with information that is not interesting.
I would here also like to address this problem by adding tools to find
this for users that need this. An example tool could pop up a list of
model elements that are connected to the model elements shown. Then
these could be selected and added to the diagram in bulk.
