Yes, ArgoUML can be freely used by commercial companies and the development team encourages such use. The current license is a BSD license which has no restrictions at all. We are discussing moving to a slightly more restrictive license such as the Eclipse Public License (EPL), LGPL, or GPL with the Classpath exemption, but those would also still allow commercial use as well as proprietary extensions. The main difference would be that modifications to the core ArgoUML (bug fixes, etc) would need to be kept open source with this new license. Examples of commercial companies using ArgoUML code today include Gentleware (Poseidon), Genuitec (MyEclipse UML), Cincom (ArgoUML-DB), and probably others that we're not aware of. Out of curiosity, can you describe what type of use you will make of ArgoUML? We're always interested to here how it's being used. Let us know if you've got any other questions.
