The normal way for an application to "talk with" AsterixDB is to use the HTTP query API (https://ci.apache.org/projects/asterixdb/api.html). Also you can checkout Cloudberry (http://cloudberry.ics.uci.edu/), which is a data visualization project built on top of AsterixDB.
