Block dependencies

How do you handle beatifully a situation where you have avalon style 
blocks (phoenix) that have non-avalon style (JNDI) dependencies? I have 
a block that is never referenced by other blocks through the container. 
The outcome is that it never goes through its lifecycle because the 
container (phoenix) thinks that is not needed.
