Agree it is a ugly way...

But IMHO, you should have a Service Discovery system in place, and all this 
disappears. JINI is one such system, that may a bit of overkill in your place 
(but could provide understanding of the basics), but basically, none of the 
systems should be dependent on availability of other services, just "fall 
back" to a known behaviour if they are not available at the moment, such as 
"do nothing".

It is a bit tricky to get the hang of such a pattern, but once you do, you 
will find it very useful for just about everything over the network.
