You are forgetting one rather important point... :o)
J2ME only has a handful of JDK classes, and it takes more than your "scale down size" to make it J2ME capable.
Only a subset of the JDK 1.1 classes can be used in standard J2ME devices.
I have previously converted Michael Kay's Saxon 6.x to J2ME and that was an "interesting" exercise. Next target is Jetty...
So to make a microkernel out of Merlin, with pluggable extensions for both J2SE and J2ME, is possibly a much bigger feat than you might imagine.
Valid point - I wasn't thinking about strict J2ME - more along the lines of smaller/tighter/smarter management of merlin internals.
