No, it's a very good question.

The silence probably stems from the fact that Merlin doesn't allow much
logging configuration yet.  Or at least that was the case last time I
checked.  We need to integrate excalibur logging or something like that into
Merlin, but it has not been a high priority issue.

You're more than welcome to take a look at the code and offer some
suggestions.  There's an example of doing this in the James wiki (which uses
Avalon logging) at:

I'm sorta hoping someone will point out that I'm wrong about this and
Merlin's logging capabilities have been improved.
