Yeah checking out outside Eclipse is fine. But You still have to go
surgically find and copy stuff into your Eclipse workspace. I mean it's
doable but lots of work that really is not required. 

Like If I just checkout fortress code, I can manage to rearrange that. But
when u checkout the whole Avalon project, it becomes a monster in Eclipse.

I have posted this issue in Maven and Eclipse list, lets see if something
comes up. Since all major Apache projects are adopting Mavenized directory
structure I think Eclipse might come up with some way to adapt to that.

But I can live with it.

Maybe checkout the CVS outside Eclipse. That is what I have done before.
