How should I achieve this result without using a manager/hints and without recompiling existing components? or is there a better architecture that I'm ignorant of.
any such architecture will probably use a somewhat similar mechanism internally. The only difference is whether the mechanism lives inside your container or you're creating it yourself.
I'm not sure what merlin supports exactly in this area. That answer is also subject to change as merlin is actively evolving. Fortress/ECM support the use of selectors, phoenix doesn't.
So if you want maximum compatibility, roll your own (as you have done). That case, it'll work in all containers.
